About this video

This video is about the life and work of J. Robert Oppenheimer, often considered one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century, although he never won a Nobel Prize. He was a major contributor to the development of the atomic bomb under the Manhattan Project during World War II. Despite his brilliance in theoretical physics and his significant contributions to quantum mechanics, Oppenheimer had struggled in his earlier years with the more experimental aspects of physics. This even led to an incident where he attempted to poison his physics tutor, Patrick Blackett, at Cambridge University with a toxic apple, though luckily Blackett did not eat it. Oppenheimer thrived when he moved to the University of Göttingen, where he focused on theoretical physics under the mentorship of Max Born. After completing his PhD, he made contributions to several fields of physics, but his calculations were often criticized. His charisma and leadership abilities, however, helped him become the science director of the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico under the Manhattan Project. Despite initial doubts about his capability, his vision and knowledge across various disciplines were critical to the development of the atomic bomb.
