Quantum Mind - Is Quantum Physics Responsible for Consciousness & Free Will?

16:2732 views0 comments4 favorites

About this video

The issue of consciousness and the role of quantum mechanics is complex and unsolved. Different options exist to explain consciousness: dualism (which views consciousness as outside the laws of physics), materialism (which sees consciousness as a direct consequence of physical laws), and a theory that posits consciousness is a result of physical processes that are not yet fully understood. Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff proposed a theory that uses quantum processes in nanoscale brain structures called microtubules to explain consciousness. But this theory faces many challenges, including that the warm, wet environment of the brain does not seem capable of maintaining quantum states for long durations. Furthermore, even if we assume quantum processes exist in the brain, that does not mean they are responsible for consciousness. Plus, the presence of quantum effects in the brain does not necessarily mean free will exists, as quantum randomness is different from free will. Research in this area is ongoing, and no definitive answers exist yet.
