Milky Way Is Full of Ripples and We Found What Caused Them

About this video

Recent studies suggest that our Milky Way galaxy is not a flat disk as traditionally depicted, but a warped structure with ripples. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) found that certain regions in the Milky Way have higher star densities, called "over densities." Notable among these is the Monoceros Ring on the galaxy's outskirts. Several other structures have been discovered, suggesting these are ripple-like formations from massive past interactions. Importantly, these formations don't align with the Milky Way's disk, indicating they might form a larger ring around the galaxy. The Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy seems crucial in these ripple formations, as its past interactions with the Milky Way caused disruptions forming these ripples. This was confirmed using data from the Gaia telescope and a technique known as galactic seismology. Future interactions with other celestial bodies will continue shaping our galaxy, emphasizing the importance of ongoing space exploration.
